Flatfish: Nature’s Masters of Camouflage

Flatfish, members of the suborder Pleuronectoidei, are fascinating bottom-dwelling fish known for their unique asymmetry—both eyes are located on one side of their head as adults. This distinctive feature enables them to lie flat on the ocean floor, blending perfectly with their surroundings for camouflage. Found worldwide, from shallow tropical waters to the icy Arctic, flatfish include popular species like flounders, halibut, and soles.

A fun fact: flatfish undergo a dramatic transformation during their life. As larvae, they have one eye on each side of their head, but as they mature, one eye "migrates" to the other side—a quirky example of evolutionary adaptation!
