The frilled lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii), also known as the frill-necked lizard, is a fascinating reptile native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea. It can grow up to 90 cm (35 inches) long and weighs about 600 grams (1.3 pounds). This lizard is famous for its large, colorful frill—a flap of skin around its neck that it dramatically flares out when threatened or to communicate. The frill's striking colors, ranging from red and orange to yellow and white, make it a standout feature.

Frilled lizards are skilled climbers, spending most of their time in trees, and they are also capable of running on their hind legs! Their diet primarily consists of insects, and they are often spotted rushing down from trees to catch their prey. When startled, they perform an iconic defense display by spreading their frill, opening their mouth, and hissing to appear larger and scare off predators.

Despite their fierce appearance, these lizards are harmless and are even considered one of Australia’s most iconic animals, alongside kangaroos and koalas.
