Astraspis: The Star-Shielded Ancient Swimmer!

Astraspis, meaning "star shield," was a primitive jawless fish that lived during the Middle to Late Ordovician period, around 467–443 million years ago. This ancient swimmer was about 20 cm (7.9 inches) long and roamed the seas of North America, including areas like Colorado and Wyoming, and even parts of Bolivia.

Astraspis was well-armored, with a body covered in plate-like scales and a forebody shielded by larger protective plates. Its name comes from the unique star-shaped tubercles on its bony plates, which were made of dentine, similar to the material in modern shark teeth. The fish also had eight gill openings on each side and large, side-facing eyes, helping it navigate its watery world.

Despite its tough exterior and intriguing structure, Astraspis was a simple creature, lacking jaws or paired fins. It’s closely related to other early fishes like Arandaspis and Sacabambaspis, making it a key figure in vertebrate evolutionary history.
